Lateral-Movement Overhead Passing Across the Net

Goal of the Drill
Develop overhead passing, footwork coordination and ball control while on the move; get players to keep their balance and deliver accurate passes during lateral movement.
Explanation of the Drill
Two players stand on opposite sides of the net in front of the 3-metre line, facing each other. One starts the drill with an overhead pass. As the receiving player passes the ball back overhead, both players shuffle sideways in the same direction, parallel to the net. The rally continues without a break while the players move laterally along the court to the end of the line. On reaching the end, the direction reverses and the same work is repeated back to the starting point.
During lateral movement the feet must not cross, the torso stays balanced, and players get under the ball before each pass. Overhead contact is made above the head, the ball is never taken into the palms, and the passes are delivered at the same height and tempo. Throughout the drill the priority is not speed but keeping the pass quality while moving.
