Ball-in-Hand Overhead Pass Coordination Drill

Goal of the Drill
Develop overhead-passing technique, hand-eye coordination, reaction speed and ball control; improve coordination by having players manage two different balls at once.
Explanation of the Drill
Two players stand on opposite sides of the net behind the 3-metre line. Each holds a volleyball; a third ball is the one in play. One player starts the drill by sending the third ball over the net with an overhead pass. Without releasing their own ball, the partner uses the ball held in their hands to contact the incoming ball and tries to send it back over the net. The same action continues back and forth.
Throughout the drill players must not drop the ball in their hands and must use only it to direct the third ball. On contact the hands stay above the head in the setting position, the touch is controlled and the ball is sent comfortably over the net. Players must keep tracking the direction of the ball, take the correct position and keep the movement flowing. The purpose of this drill is not to generate power but to develop coordination, reaction speed and hand control in the setting position.
