Back Set to Zone 4 from a Turned-Away Position

    Goal of the Drill

Develop the back-set technique and directional control; build the setter’s ability to deliver an accurate ball to zone 4 with the back turned to the target.

    Explanation of the Drill

One player takes the setter position in front of the net between zones 2 and 3. The other stands behind the 3-metre line and starts the drill with an overhead pass to the setter. The setter positions with the back toward zone 4. Getting under the incoming ball, they use the back-set technique to direct it onto the target (cone or hoop) in zone 4.

On contact the hands must be ready above the head, the elbows in a natural position and the contact made in one smooth motion. The player must not direct the ball with the arms alone; support from the knees, torso balance and wrist action send the ball to the target under control. The height and direction of the set should be the same quality on every repetition, with accuracy the priority.
