Back Set to Zone 2 from a Turned-Away Position

Goal of the Drill
Develop the back-set technique and directional feel; build the setter’s ability to deliver an accurate ball to zone 2 with the back turned to the target.
Explanation of the Drill
One player takes the setter position in front of the net between zones 2 and 3. The other stands behind the 3-metre line and starts the drill with an overhead pass to the setter. The setter positions with the back toward zone 2. Getting under the incoming ball, they use the back-set technique to direct it onto the target (cone or hoop) in zone 2.
On contact the head and shoulders stay balanced, the hands are prepared above the head and the set is executed backward in one smooth motion. The player must not use the arms alone; the ball is directed to the target with support from the knees, torso balance and wrist control. The aim is to control the height and direction of the back set and hit the target on every repetition.
