Stationary Blocking from Zone 2

Goal of the Drill
Develop the correct blocking stance, jump timing and hand position in zone 2; enable the player to block the attack at the right moment while holding position.
Explanation of the Drill
One player stands on a bench or similar platform in zone 4 to act as the attacker. The other waits in the blocking ready position in zone 2 on the opposite side of the net. The attacker spikes the ball into the opposing court under control. The blocker tracks the flight of the ball without moving from position and tries to block it with correct timing.
Before the block the feet are shoulder-width apart, the knees slightly bent and the weight on the balls of the feet. The hands are ready at shoulder height, palms facing the net, elbows slightly bent. At the moment the attacker contacts the ball, the blocker jumps powerfully off both feet, extends the arms fully upward and penetrates the hands over the net toward the opposing court. The fingers stay spread and firm, aiming to direct the ball back into the opponent’s court. On landing, both feet should touch down together and the knees absorb the impact to keep balance.
