Setter Dump and Roll-Shot Decision Drill

Goal of the Drill
Develop the dump and roll-shot attacks played from the setter position; build the ability to read the space left open by the opposing block and defense and place the ball into the scoring zone under control.
Explanation of the Drill
One player takes the setter position in front of the net between zones 2 and 3. The other stands behind the 3-metre line and starts the drill with an overhead pass to the setter. The setter gets under the incoming ball but, instead of setting, makes an attacking decision on the second contact: either dumping the ball softly over the net into zone 2 of the opposing court, or directing it into zone 1 with a controlled spiking motion. In both cases the aim is accuracy and correct zone selection rather than power. This drill particularly suits left-handed setters, whose natural attacking angles it develops. Right-handed players can mirror the drill, dumping into zone 4 or directing a controlled roll shot/spike into zone 5.
Before attacking, the player should look like they are about to set until the last moment, contact the ball at the highest point and place it into the open space with wrist control.
