Mixed-Technique Partner Ball Control

Goal of the Drill
Develop the ability to switch quickly between overhead passing, roll shots and spiking; get players to choose the right technique at the right moment to improve ball control and rally continuity.
Explanation of the Drill
Two players face each other parallel to the net. One starts the drill with an overhead pass to the partner. The players then continue to send the ball back and forth using overhead passes, roll shots and spikes in turn. Each player chooses the appropriate technique based on the height and speed of the incoming ball and tries to keep the rally going.
Throughout the drill players must move into position under the ball, keep their balance before each contact and use the body position that fits the technique. In overhead passes the ball is met above the head; in roll shots the wrist directs the ball into open space; in spikes the arm mechanics stay controlled and accuracy comes first. The aim is not to hit hard but to move smoothly between techniques and keep the rally alive.
