Block Timing and Contact Technique at the Net

    Goal of the Drill

Develop the blocking jump, correct timing and the ability to contact the ball at the highest point above the net; build the habit of correct hand position and a controlled landing.

    Explanation of the Drill

Two players stand on opposite sides of the net. One holds the ball still just above the height of the net. The other waits in front of the net in the blocking ready position. The blocker bends the knees under control, jumps and grabs the ball with both hands over the net. After taking the ball they land in balance and pass it back under the net to the partner. The movement is repeated the same way.

Before the jump the knees are slightly bent and the weight is on the balls of the feet. During the block the arms extend strongly upward, the hands penetrate over the net toward the opposing court, and contact is made at the highest reachable point. On landing, both feet should touch down together and the knees bend to absorb the impact.
