Progressive Back Set from a Bench

Goal of the Drill
Develop the setter’s back-set technique across different difficulty levels; build correct timing and setting accuracy while keeping balance through the sit-to-stand transitions.
Explanation of the Drill
One player stands on the 3-metre line while the other sits on a bench in front of the net, between zones 2 and 3. The drill has three stages. Stage 1: the player behind the 3-metre line sends the ball to the seated player, who stands up as the ball approaches, controls it briefly above the head and delivers a back set to zone 2. Stage 2: the player sits back down on the bench. This time they play the incoming ball with a back set in a single touch, without standing up and without holding the ball. Stage 3: the player sits on the bench, stands up as the ball approaches but this time back-sets it to zone 2 in a single touch, without holding it above the head.
At every stage the player must get under the ball in time, prepare the hands in the setting position in advance and make contact above the head. In the stages that involve standing up, the movement must stay fluid, balance must not be lost and the direction and height of the set must be maintained. The purpose of the drill is to execute the back set with correct timing and high accuracy from different positions.
