Middle Attack Preparation and Timing Drill

Goal of the Drill
Develop the middle blocker’s ball control before attacking, the attack approach and the timing of the middle attack; build fast attack preparation and effective hitting after the first contact.
Explanation of the Drill
One player stands behind the 3-metre line in the middle of the court. The other takes the setter position between zones 2 and 3. The setter starts the drill by sending the ball to the player behind the 3-metre line. The attacker plays the first ball under control, hitting it down under the net into the other side. Immediately after this first action they return quickly to the starting position and prepare to attack. The setter delivers the second ball at the tempo and height suited to a middle attack. Using correct approach steps, the attacker rises to the ball and spikes it from the middle over the net into the opposing court.
Throughout the drill the player must move into the attacking position as fast as possible after the first action, match the approach rhythm to the tempo of the set and contact the ball at the highest reachable point. The first part develops ball control and coordination, while the second focuses on the defense-to-attack transition and middle attack timing at match tempo.
