Sharp Cross-Court Spike and Controlled Forearm Pass

    Goal of the Drill

Develop sharp cross-court attacking accuracy, forearm-pass control and the ability to produce a controlled ball out of defense; work on attacking and defensive technique at the correct angle.

    Explanation of the Drill

Two players stand on opposite sides of the net in a sharp cross-court alignment — one in zone 4 (left front) and the other in zone 5 (left back) of the opposing court, or its mirror image, so the ball travels on a short cross-court angle. Without moving from their spot and without jumping, one player uses the spiking arm action to send the ball to the partner on the sharp cross. The receiving player controls it with a forearm pass, lifts it above the head to gain control and then sends it back to the partner on the same sharp cross with the same technique. The drill continues back and forth at the same tempo.

The attacking player uses an open hand and a controlled spiking motion, prioritising accuracy over power. The passing player reads the incoming angle correctly, places the body behind the ball, builds a solid platform without bending the elbows and lifts the ball under control to head height.
